"time is taking its sweet time erasing you."
welp. i survived my first semester of college. with a broken heart, and people who I thought were my friends but aren’t. so there’s that.
on midway atoll, a remote cluster of islands more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent, the detritus of our mass consumption surfaces in an astonishing place: inside the stomachs of thousands of dead baby albatrosses. the nesting chicks are fed lethal quantities of plastic by their parents, who mistake the floating trash for food as they forage over the vast polluted pacific ocean.
"for me, kneeling over their carcasses is like looking into a macabre mirror. …like the albatross, we [the consumers and polluters of this world] find ourselves lacking the ability to discern anymore what is nourishing from what is toxic to our lives and souls." - chris jordan
This is not okay.
"When I was younger I really thought that meanness was something that people outgrow and that people don’t pick on you anymore when you’re a grown up. Looking back on the daydream that I had about mean kids, and people picking on you, I grew up and I realized that no matter who you are or how old you are, or where you live, or whether you’re in school or not, what language you speak, or whether or not you get to stand on a big stage and perform for a lot of people, there’s always going to be somebody picking on you. I’ve learned that it’s not about it stopping. It’s more about deciding how to deal with people picking on you for no reason and being mean.”
welp. i’ve been in the library since 5:30….
